Not only do you have just a few seconds to grab the attention of the web visitor, content developers must perform well within search engine searches so they are “found”when web surfers search on related keywords or phrases. In order to perform well, a website must have traffic. Decent traffic will result if a website ranks well in search engines, that is why strong placement in search engines for critical keywords and phrases is essential.

When struggling with search engine optimization just go back to the basics. What do search engines want? Search engines want to return search results, that are relevant and useful to the searcher. Webmasters can help search engines discern what keywords or phrases their site relates to.

Search Engine Optimization Dos

1. CSS - Cascading Style Sheets.

Use header tags and cascading style sheets in your website design. Many search engines value H1 and H2 tags more than others. The assumption is that header tags are used to highlight the most important items or themes that appear on a page. By using header tags, webmasters can bullet those keywords or phrases they deem to be most important. The CSS file will help your site load quickly and provide a consistent look and feel throughout the website.

2. Titles.

A website is the collection of webpages under a single domain. A webpage refers to a specific page within a website. Unique page titles throughout a website is important. Websites typically contain many webpages and using unique titles on webpages will help highlight different key phrases while uniting all the website content in a single theme.

3. Related Links.

Links from related or relevant sites are more important than generic links from unrelated websites. Links are seen as “votes” of quality content. Search engines weigh links from websites that contain related or similar content more importantly, than links from unrelated websites. Work to obtain relevant quality links from related or authority websites.

4. Anchor Text.

Vary anchor text. Use a variety of phrases to link to a site. Using different anchor text to link to a website is seen by search engines as “natural” linking. Search engines use the anchor text of a websites incoming link as part of their algorithm to determine a websites theme.

5. Copy.

A minimum of 200 words of copy is suggested for each web page. In order to spider a site a search engine must have sufficient copy to spider. Less does not necessarily mean more, when it comes to search engine ranking. In general try to keep copy “above the fold”, so that visitors don’t have to scroll. Copy above the fold is usually sufficient to determine the context of the webpage.

6. Fresh.

Keep it fresh. Search engines take notice of how frequently content is updated or added. Search engines spider websites that update content on a frequent basis at regular intervals. Add new content or webpages daily or weekly to increase a search engine spider’s frequency.

7. Consistent.

Provide quality, consistent, fresh content. Consistent related content is critical to encouraging both visitors and search engines to return. Providing consistent quality content encourages links which will increase a websites popularity.

8. Themed.

Relate the contents of a website by a single theme. Uniting content using contextual words will help websites rank well for less critical but very targeted related keywords and phrases.

Search Engine Optimization Don’ts

1. Keyword Stuffing.

Don’t stuff web pages with keywords that is similar to or the same as the webpages background color. Most search engines have ways to detect keyword stuffing. Keyword stuffing will likely result in a search engine ban.

2. Cloaking.

Cloaking is when the website identifies the IP address of a search engine spider and feeds the spider content that it is not really on the page. Essentially the search engine sees optimized content that is not currently on the web page that it is spidered. It is difficult for search engines to detect cloaking, but if a site is banned or cloaking it is very difficult to convince a search engine to relist the content.

3. Don’t Sacrifice Quality

Don’t sacrifice quality for optimization. While search engine optimization is important, it is equally important that the content on a webpage should make sense. Placing well in search engines at the expense of a quality professional image with decent web copy, will not usually result in sales. It is a matter of striking a balance.

4. Spam.

Not much to be said about this one, don’t spam. Don’t spam search engines, don’t conduct email spam campaigns, and don’t spam forums. Being labeled a spammer is a hard reputation to shed.

A website is an important part of a business, search engine optimization is a business investment and requires attention and effort in order to succeed. Website creation is more than just pretty images and an attractive design. In order to “sell” your product or service your information, your site must be found. Therefore it is imperative that search engine content is optimized for search engine placement.

I will be honest; the title of this article is slightly misleading. You see, in my opinion, the best traffic that money can buy actually doesn’t cost anything - it’s free!

I am talking of course about the magical traffic that we have all heard of but that only a select few have experienced…..free search engine traffic.

We all know that it is possible to get tons of free traffic from the big search engines - Google, MSN, Yahoo and so on but getting to the top of these engines has always been incredibly tough. Actually, I am being slightly dishonest again. Going back a few years, it was in fact very easy to get a high search engine ranking, you just put a page together, threw in a few meta keywords and a decent page title and scattered your keywords across the text content a bit and that was it. Wait a week or so and bingo, you’ve got yourself a front page ranking on Google! Ok, it wasn’t quite that simple but it wasn’t much harder than that.

Nowadays getting to the top of the engines is much harder and even if you do make it to the top, you can be dropped just as quickly if the search engine decides to change the way in which they rank websites.

However, whilst getting your site indexed and ranked in a decent position does take a bit of effort, it isn’t impossible, especially if you know what the search engines are looking for. I am no expert on the topic of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) but I have studied the subject on a casual basis since I first started online in 1998. I am really a lazy SEO’er and part of the reason for this is that I have spent the time in past optimizing sites, only to have Google (or whoever) suddenly decide that they don’t like my site quite as much as they did last week and dropping me way down their rankings. All that lovely free traffic gone overnight I got fed up with this a couple of years ago and vowed never to chase search engine traffic again!

That said, there is nothing quite like top quality, targeted, free traffic and the buzz of getting several hundred (or even thousand) visitors every single day without spending out a single penny can’t be beaten. Just think how much it would cost you to buy 500 visitors each day using Google Adwords or similar (and this form of advertising isn’t anywhere near as effective as it used to be but that’s a story for another day!).

Anyway, back to the point of this article…. It is possible to get very good search engine rankings very quickly IF you follow some basic rules when you build your websites. To illustrate this (and remember, I am no expert), I noticed this week that my new site, SimplyWholesale.co.uk already has several number one (and front page) rankings on Google, MSN and several other smaller search engines! I am even beating eBay on some keywords and phrases Now, bear in mind that this site was launched just two weeks ago. I haven’t done any ‘major’ search engine optimization on it - just the absolute basics. There are hardly any inbound links to the site (seriously, like a dozen absolute maximum) AND none of the search engines have crawled anywhere near the entire site. At the time of writing, Google has indexed just 17 pages out of almost 1500!! Despite this, Google and the other engines are sending me some fairly healthy traffic everyday. Just think how much traffic I could be getting in a few weeks time once the site has been fully indexed?!

So, why am I telling you this? Simple. Because getting good search engine rankings doesn’t have to be an impossible task. If you know the basics and apply them to your site, there is no reason why you shouldn’t start to see some free traffic coming your way. Now of course, you can’t expect to do a bit of work on your site and suddenly rank no.1 on Google for a really competitive search term such as ‘earn money online’ BUT you don’t need to. At the end of the day all you need to do is make sure that your site ranks well for a handful of relevant keywords/phrases and as long as they are words that people are actually searching for, you will see the benefits.

Lately I have noticed that many website owners in general and many webmasters in particular have been asking about and sometimes even questioning the effectiveness of submitting their website to a directory.
I think this is because we have been seeing a trend recently of greater numbers of directories, the vast majority of which are not what you would term “quality directories”. In fact some of them are little more than glorified link farms. This ongoing trend is perhaps most glaringly apparent to veterans of the internet, I mean webmasters who have been promoting websites since at least the mid-90’s or so.

You see, back then there was a much smaller number of web directories out there. Because the search engines were much different then
(link popularity was not a major part of their algorithm yet), there was not a need for the low level directories which seem to exist
solely for the purpose of increasing one’s pagerank and link popularity. The major engine of the time, Excite, used such factors as keyword density and meta tags almost entirely when ranking a website.

It was not untill webcrawler came around that link popularity became important. What few directories there were usually sent a substantial amount
of traffic to your site, comparitively speaking. If you were listed on one of the major directories, depending on your niche,
you might recieve enouph traffic from one of them to practially make a living (in those days the Yahoo directory was set up differently so that if you were in their directory you recieved droves of visitors from both the category and you recieved high priority on related searches).

Nowadays link popularity and pagerank are major factors in search engine positioning so there is amajor need and desire for more links, thus the greater number
of web directories. They vary greatly in quality: some are human edited with strict standards of approval. Others approve every listing,
even from low quality sites that have little content. Will these directories help you from an SERP standpoint? Well, it depends, in my opinion, on how targeted the category is.

You must spend some extra time finding a category with similiar content as your site or you may gain pagerank at the price of relevence.
And some reports suggest that the major search engines may be emphasizing relavence more and more in the future.

And of course there are still some high quality directories out there. Most people are familiar with DMOZ.org and Yahoo.

These are probably still the most important. But there is also JoeAnt, Goguides, Buzzle, Gimpsy and Splut, among several others.
And more are rising in relavence. To increase the relevence of your own site in the eyes of the search index sites, augment your directory submission
with forum postings in related forums and write some articles on the subject matter of your website, then submit them to the article directories
with your link in the resource box.

While there are many strategies to use for Search Engine Optimisation, there are some things you shouldn’t do. Your site can be penalized by the search engines for some of these. Or while you think a strategy is helping to raise your rankings, it may not.

TEXT IN GRAPHICS
Most search engines don’t read pictures or graphics, so use as much text as possible and make sure it’s relevant text. Good information and solid content that focuses on your product and services will allow the search engines to identify your site and give you a better positioning within those search results. Sites that use an image full of text, instead of text, can appear as an empty page to a search engine. This is specially relevant on a home page.

MOVING A PAGE THAT ALREADY HAS A PR
If you move a page, it will lose its PR until the next time Google indexes it. So set up the page’s original URL to direct people to the new page, and tell them whether the move is permanent or temporary

DEAD ENDS
All page should have a way out or exit via a link.

ARTIFICIALLY INCREASE A PAGE’S KEYWORD DENSITY
Loading pages with irrelevant words in an attempt to increase a page’s keyword density will penalise your site. This includes stuffing ALT tags that users are unlikely to view.

USING HIDDEN TEXT OR LINKS
You should use only text and links that are visible to users.

LINKS FROM LINK FARMS AND NON-RELEVANT SITES
Make sure they are from other relevant sites, not link farms or FFA sites. Best is links from pages without many other links, from sites whose content/theme is similar to or complementary to yours.

UNNATURAL LINKS
The search engines prefer your linking to be ‘natural’, to appear as if they were placed in the normal course of your business dealings. Not too many at a time, not all coming from link pages, not all reciprocal links, and not all coming from only PR 5 or above sites (looks like you bought them).

USING THE SAME TEXT IN INCOMING LINKS
It isn’t natural to have every website that links to you have the same text on the link description. The natural tendency would be to have a certain percent be the site’s name, but after that it should be a wide variety of description. Your link text description is a key factor for how your site/page will rank, so make sure that you keep that in mind as you specify your preferred link text description on your website.

1.	Do not make your title from your webpage long. This is because Google, Yahoo, MSN and all the other (mayor) search engines have a limit on reading the title from your webpage. Make your webpage title as much effective as you can, get to the point instantly and put some good keywords in it.

2.	Do not duplicate your content on your site, this will work negatively. Use unique content on each page.

3.	Good keywords help you, but only with good keywords you won’t come far. You have to do some marketing and advertisements like participating in forums and build your reputation up.

4.	Do not hesitate to submit questions on SEO forums. Knowing more is more important than knowing less.

5.	Link exchange helps, unless you exchange links with a website that does not have a lot of visitors. To know how much a website is visited, download the Google toolbar (http://www.google.com/toolbar/) and look at the page-ranking. Exchange your link with a PR higher than 6 and you will come far!

6.	Download several tools that help you make a good keyword combination. There are some good programs for free.

7.	Do not choose a keyword that has a lot of competition. Look for abandoned effective keywords.

8.	Do not put a lot of advertisement on your website; it will work negatively for the visitor.

9.	Choose an effective domain name that suits the product/service that you provide.

10. Bolding, italicizing or other mark-up works positively. Bold your important keywords.

11. Always add fresh content so your visitors come back for the new content.

12. If you are a programmer/coder, code your code clear.

13. Do not exchange links with spammed websites.

14. Use unique titles.

15. Submit your site to some searchmachines (http://www.bblmedia.com/addurl.html)

16. Have patient.

17. Do some research on search engine optimization.

18. Do not put irrelevant and bad content on your website.

19. Make your navigation easy.

20. Make a 404 page. You will see an error if you try to view a page that does not exist. Instead of that, you can make a 404 page. If you have one and the visitor that tries to visit a page that does not exist, it will show the page that you want.

21. Viral marketing is a very good marketing way too. If you sell a product, e-mail the custom and ask whether he will tell other people about your product and in exchange of that, you give him discount on your product. All the mayor companies thank their success to this way of marketing.

22. If you have money, try Google Adwords (http://www.adwords.com/).

23. If you have a LOT of money, try to make some off-internet advertisements. For example in magazines.

24. Be active on the internet and put the link of your website in your signature in a forum for example.

25. Participate in forums to get information that you want. You really learn from the experienced guys.

As SEO professionals we are constantly searching for ways to get our sites ranked and indexed better.

We all know that backlinks are “life blood” that get a site ranked higher in the search engines.

Black hat SEO experts in the quest to get one way backlinks till now relied on various methods like blog comment spam and referer log spam.

The latest technique is using social bookmarking to get one way back links.

What is social bookmarking?

Social bookmarking is utilizing a web service, where users create a public repository of bookmarks pertaining to sites that they like.

The concept of social bookmarking dates back to 1996 with the launch of itList.com, followed by services like Blink and hotlinks and many more. But,the popularity of Social Bookmarking increased with the advent of the most popular bookmarking site till date, del.icio.us.

To the uninitated, these bookmarks may seem like geekspeak, but from an SEO standpoint these can build you a massive amount of backlinks which seem to originate from authority sites.

So how does one go about utilizing these social bookmarking services?

You simply sign up for an account and then post your urls. Each post requires you to enter the url, a title for the anchor text, a short description and of course the tags under which you want your link bookmarked.

A tag is a keyword which acts like a subject or category. Each user “tags” a webpage or image using his own unique tag. An image or webpage may have multiple tags that identify it. Webpages and images with identical tags are then linked together and users may use the tag to search for similar webpages and images.

Most of these services give you a personalized book mark page that has all your bookmarks displayed, and though when you start out the pagerank of your personalized page might be zero, it slowly builds up over time.

An additional important point worth looking at is that each tag page on the site has a pagerank which gets passed on to your site.

For example the page for the tag “advertising” has a pagerank of 3.

Below is a list of various services that you can utilize to boost your page rank

1) http://del.icio.us/ : This one of the most popular of all social bookmarking sites and has a huge pagerank of 8.

2) http://digg.com: Digg is a technology news website where users submit stories for review, but rather than allowing an editor to decide which stories go on the homepage, the users do. Digg is a site with a pagerank of 7

3) http://www.reddit.com, Page Rank 7

4) http://www.blinklist.com, page rank 6

5) http://www.simpy.com, page rank 6

A great way to get visitors to your sites to bookmark your website is using a neat service available at http://ekstreme.com/socializer/

This service provides a small snippet of code that when added to your site creates a special link on your site. When any visitor clicks on this link they are provided with a large list of social bookmarking sites which they can add your site to.
In case your website is a wordpress blog a similar wordpress plugin called Sociable that can be found at http://push.cx/sociable

Thus, using social bookmarking you can improve the ranking of your website and gain valuable pagerank.

One piece of software any optimizer should love is Firefox. Now some may say “Why Firefox, it’s only a browser?” Yes, it’s a browser, but one that supports a big variety of plugins, some of them very useful for search engine optimization. So let’s see what those plugins are:

1. SEOpen ( https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/570/ ): this is one of the best and most used Firefox seo plugins, and has many tools that make it a favorite of mine. So let’s see what it can do:

* in Google it can check for: backlinks, indexed pages, related pages, cache and PageRank.
* in Yahoo and MSN: backlinks and indexed pages.
* for Alexa: overview, traffic details, backlinks and related sites.
* keyword density of the most used words on the page.
* DMOZ checker: see if the site is included in the directory.
* check for robots.txt.
* validator to check your page for errors (it uses the validator from www.w3.org).

There are other things, but these are the most important.

2. SEO Links
( http://www.webmasterbrain.com/seo-tools/firefox-extensions/seo-links/ ) is another extension I use everyday. When the extension si active and you hover over a link a tooltip will appear that will show you Yahoo, MSN, and Google link popularity and ranking data for the URL and anchor text pair. When you’re simply browsing this can be annoying, but you can simply deactivate it with a right-click!

This could be very easily used to check your search engine rankings for a certain page, and here is how: write up a list with all the keywords and keyphrases that you want to rank for, and then link those words or phrases to the web pages associated with them!

Now every time you want to check your ranks activate the SEO Links extension and hover over the links — you will see where your pages are in Google, Yahoo and MSN.

3. Don’t waste anymore of your precious screen real estate just to find out what your PageRank and AlexaRank is! SearchStatus ( https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/321/ ) can sit anywhere you want (I keep it in the status bar) and you’ll receive the precious info at a glance. But this little tool can do a lot more than that:

* it shows what metatags a site has
* checks for backlinks and indexed pages in Google, Yahoo and MSN
* it shows the robots.txt file
* keyword density report function
* and best of all: the highlight “nofollow” links will show you what links will be followed by search engine spiders — very useful when you want to submit your site to a directory and don’t know if it will matter from a seo perspective.

So in case you’re not using Firefox, go get it! It could be your best friend when it comes to search engine optimization!

The term SEO or Search Engine Optimization is most useful and more commonly used words in internet marketing or e-business. One question always appears in our mind that what is search engine optimization? Many of SEO differentiate SEO term in different ways but I think the simple and easiest definition of Search Engine Optimization is to maintain a website quality and its ranking in different search engine is called search engine optimization. Now days there are thousands of website were launching per day with the specific set of keywords. Each of website owner want to his site at the top of every search engine SREP’s, but how can be this possible. The only and a single way to getting our targeted projection is a search engine optimization. It is a process of increasing the amount of visitors to a Web site by ranking high in the search results of a search engine. This is a long term ongoing process. But now a day’s search engine optimization is getting more & more important not only for e-business purpose but also for the extra website exposure.

Importance of Search Engine Optimization:

Nowadays, daily thousands of websites get online. But only a professional can make sure that your site will come on top while some one is searching a keyword related to your site. Our aim is to design effective, functional & professional looking site and increase traffic to your site through search engine promotion.

Search Engine Optimization gives your company an edge over your competitors and improves both your Internet branding as well as online presence .The end-results are drastic reductions of traditional media advertising costs due to an effective online campaign, increased brand promotion, and tremendously improved qualified traffic to your site. All

Types of search engine perform following tasks:

Web crawling
Document indexing
Query processing
Ranking

Search Engine Optimization has a two main component

1-	Strategy of Keywords
2-	Link Popularity

The Strategy of Keywords plays an important role in search engine optimization process. Choosing right keywords for a website and promoting them throughout the website.

Following keywords strategy is mostly used in search engine Optimization

Meta Tags are the most important terms used in search engine optimization. Generally there are four types Meta tags used in web promotion. They are- Title, Descriptions, Keywords, Alt tags A Meta tag (or tag) tells the search engine what your site is about. The major search engines will review your site and read your meta tags to determine categories for your site. Meta tags tell the search engine your site’s title, description and keywords. Without these tags, it’s difficult for your site to achieve a high ranking on many major search engines.

Title: The title Meta tag should include your main keywords. It should be related to the page contents. The least amount of words should be in the title. The selections of accurate title make easier to got higher position at search engines at that specific search phrase. The title is probably the most important part of your site to evaluate, as it is the most frequently searched component by search engines. It should state exactly what your site is about and include your most important keywords.

Keywords: Keywords analysis is a most important and challenging work for site promotions. Selection of accurate and suitable key words can increase traffic on your site and also increase the page rank of your site. The Meta Tag Keywords should be those words or phrases that we think people will use when they surfing on net for searching related site on various search engine The right keywords for our web site should be specific enough to describe our web site’s focus, yet general enough for potential customers to use as search criteria with search engines. Be sure to include your domain name, company name and product’s name in the keywords.

The best way to determine your keywords is to step out of your shoes and imagine yourself as one of your customers or prospects. How do you think these people will search for sites like yours? What keywords do you think they will enter into the search engines?

Create a list of all of the words that apply to your business, including your business name, product names (both brand and generic names) and the names of the geographic regions you serve. You may also want to consider variations of these words (such as “dog, dogs, doggie, etc) and common misspellings of important keywords

Description: Description is the second Meta tag used in web promotion. Site description should be a logical sentence, which describes our business including with keyword phrase. It should not be more long or a list of keywords

Alt Tag: Alt meta tag is also importance in search engine optimization. Alt tags use for give any title to the images. Alt tag should be more related to the images and also include the main keywords of your site.

Without the help of good & relevant site keywords, a website wouldn’t get top positions in various search engines.

Second method which is used in search engine optimization is link popularity method. I will discuss about link popularity at the next step of this article.

Finally if we draw a blue print of Search Engine Optimization process, then we can divide SEO process in following terms:

There are two types of optimization process used in search engine optimization:

1.	Onpage optimization

Search Engine Friendly Web Design
Search Engine Web Contents
Meta Tag Analysis

2.	Offpage optimization.

Search Engine & Directory Submission
Link Exchanging/ Popularity
<dir>One Way Link
Reciprocal Link Exchange
Article Submission</dir>

Onpage Optimization: Onpage optimization includes search engine friendly web design, web contents, and Meta tag analysis.

Web Design: Search engine friendly web design is the primary needs of effective website promotion. Web design with SEO friendly make easier to get top position at major search engines at search phrase.

Web Contents: Web content is the second basic requirements of effective search engine optimization. Content of the site must be related to the site. It should be good without spelling mistakes and users interest. It should also have the keywords important for your website.

If you have your own web designing then our experts will also help you in web designing and web site content according to search engine.

Title meta tag, description tag, and keyword tag, alt tag I have already discussed above of this paragraph.

Offpage Optimization: Offpage optimization includes search engine & directory submission, link popularity, site map generator, and article submission.

Directory Submission: Directory submission is the main and most important step in search engine optimization. By submitting site in search directories, will help in increasing traffic and also increase ranking for your site in search engines. To find right category in a directory for your site is most important, whereas by choosing wrong category search Engines may penalize your site.

Link Exchanging & Popularity: Link Popularity is the most important term in web promotions. Link exchanging is one of the primaries “off the page” factors that search engine use in determining how a site ranks in their search results. Your overall link popularity score is integrated into search engine ranking algorithms to determine where your site gets placed in their search results. There are generally use two types link exchanging services – Reciprocal link exchanging and one-way link exchanging. Both link exchanging are important in web promotion. But always keep in mind, when you will do link exchange, firstly check that domain whether it is supplemental or not. Supplemental pages are those pages which were completely useless for google and also your site. It may be harmful for your site.

There are three terms mainly used in link exchanging, one is Link, second is link popularity and third is link exchange. Link is also known as hyperlink or web link, is a connection from one website to another website. These are underline text on web page that will help to us to move another web page. Link popularity displays that how many hyperlinks is pointed to our site. It is also display quantity and quality of sites that are link with our website. Link exchanging means give with one hand and takes with other hand. In this process we send a mail to other webmaster and do request that if he will add my website link at his website page then I will add your website link at our webpage. In my opinion this is a bargaining process.

Article Submission: The simple and easiest way to increasing site traffic is article submission. You should to write a unique article related to your website and submit it different article directories. But always keep in mind that your article should be relevant to your website information or content. Now a day many article directory provides free article submission services. So I think this a most important and free of cost method to get more traffic. The crucial benefit of article submission is that we got one way link to our website.

Blog Submission: Simply we used blogs for personal information but now a day’s blog is widely used in search engine optimization. It also provides one way link to your site. It brings more traffics or visitors to the website. It also helps in search engine ranking. Blog is an important technique for increasing site traffics. Today many bloggers provides absolutely free blogging service, so we should take full advantage of this service. So I will suggest to all of SEO guys to creating your own blog and do submission in different directories. Consequently it will increase your site traffics.

Join Discussion Forum: The another medium for getting one way links or inbound links is discussion forums. I would suggest to all webmaster to join discussion forums or message board related to SEO and does posting & replying threads in the forums. Be sure to include your URL in your signature and also anchor text to be linked with URL should be your site Keyword. It provides a one way links to your website.

You’ve just spent several weeks working with a your web designer building your company’s websites. You spent a lot of time making revisions, writing and creating copy, making more revisions, but finally your project is complete and your website is live on the internet for the whole world to see. A few weeks later you get a call from a business colleague, they say they went to look for your company in a search engine but your company was no where to be found, and they thought you ought to know about it. You open up your web browser , head over to Google and your company is nowhere to be found. You go to Yahoo and MSN but the results are the same, it’s like your invisible to the online world.

Now clearly this isn’t the goal you had in mind when you built your website. You wanted your company to be seen by the whole world, not to be so well hidden, that people looking for you can’t find you. However this is a problem that affects many small to mid sized businesses who are just getting online or haven’t done any online promotions. To help the search engines and ultimately your customers find you you’ll to start working on promoting yourself online. Promoting yourself online is similar to promoting yourself in the real world you need to find ways to get your website noticed.

To help the search engines find your site you need a basic understanding of how they work. Search engines have programs that scan web pages, they read the contents of these pages and try to figure out what they think they are about. When they visit these pages they also look for links to other pages, note them down for future programs to visit and read. The early search engine developers had a bit of a sense of humor when they developed these programs to crawl across the web they named them “spiders”. The more often these spiders find links pointing to your pages the more frequently your website will be examined by the spiders, this process is known as “crawling”.

So to get the search engines to find your website you’re going to need links. There are lots of different ways you can get links, some are easy, some a hard, and some will even cost you money. Examples of places you can get links are chambers of commerce, business trade organization, networking groups, directories, press releases, syndicated articles, blogs, and link exchanges. There are pluses and minuses associated with each of these types of links. In a nutshell what you are looking for is a prominently placed link on a reputable website.

Sometimes judging a websites reputation is a little tricky and is more of an art form than a science. As a rule of thumb don’t ask or pay for a link from a website you don’t want to be associated with. Sometimes you’ll receive link requests via email asking you to exchange or trade links, however when you visit the website, you get the feeling somethings not right. In some cases these people will have already put up a link to you. Don’t worry about it just delete the email, there’s usually no reason to worry about someone else linking to you. Another thing to note about links is they aren’t all valued equally. For example a link from your brother’s hobby website isn’t as “important” as link from The Washington Post, CNN, or Business Week Magazine. What you are really want is a link from another established, trusted, and quality website.

Whether you are new to Internet marketing or a seasoned website developer, knowing how to effectively utilize linking campaigns, website submission, and unique content will have the greatest impact on the success of your website regardless of its’ purpose. You are probably already aware of these marketing tools but are not sure how to use them to your sites’ best advantage. In order to help you determine the most effective way to capitalize on each of these online merchandising utilities for increased website success, you need to know the what, how, and why information for them.

So, what exactly is a Search Engine? How do they work? Why are they important to cater to? According to Dictionary.com, a search engine is “a website whose primary function is gathering and reporting information available on the internet or a portion of the internet.” There are basically two types of Internet search services: search engines and directories.

A search engine site uses “software spiders” or “web crawlers” to index websites and retrieve the requested information. Google, AltaVista, Hotbot, Go.com, Excite and Web Crawler are examples of internet search engine services. An Internet search directory uses human input by reviewing directory submissions from users and website owners to fill their indexes. Yahoo!, AOL Search, MSN.com, Lycos and Snap.com are some of the top rated search directories.

It is important to understand, cater to, and work with search engines and directories in order to increase your websites’ visibility. Search engine services which utilize “web spiders” and “crawlers” to sift through their indexes, are greatly affected by changing web pages, page titles, body content and linking. Whereas a search directory looks for information only in the website descriptions submitted to their site, thus changing your website pages will have no effect on your rank in a directory.

Why is search engine ranking important? Because most potential customers never look beyond the first page of a search listing and with a poor page ranking, you will have little to no traffic. Regardless of which type of search service is being utilized, the single most important way you can affect your page ranking is by having good content on your site. It must be relevant information with links to further relevant information on other websites. In the war for page ranking, content is king. And fluff won’t do, in fact it could negatively impact your page ranking.

The next most important factor for increasing page rank is by implementing a linking campaign. However, you must be stringent about who you link to and how many links you have. Too many irrelevant links will also negatively impact your websites’ page rank. You must choose carefully by making sure the sites you link your website to have relevant information similar to your own. Linking for the sake of gathering links is useless and harmful. It is much better to link to and be listed on a corresponding site with very few links and an excellent page rank rather than being one of a multitude of inconsequential links listed on a poorly ranked site. The idea is simple…have good relevant content on your site and link to other sites with good relevant content.

Hopefully you know have a feel for the importance of search engines, page ranking and site linking. Just remember that “too much is not a good thing” when it comes to developing your websites’ page ranking and marketing. Too many links and too much irrelevant content will hurt your site not help it. Stick to the basics: excellent and useful content with links to more useful content. Put yourself in your potential customers’ shoes – would you want to read a bunch of fluff or waste your time scanning useless information? What would you do if after clicking on a link you found even more useless drivel? Click that red “x” in the upper right corner – wouldn’t you.
